Mount Royal University Cancels Intramural Hockey Due to 'Inclusivity'

Mount Royal University in Calgary has cancelled ice hockey due to 'inclusion' and accessibility issues.

“It was decided to discontinue the program due to the increased costs of ice weather, as well as the availability of ice weather, which we felt made the program less accessible," the university stated.

“Cougars Athletics and Recreation is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. As such, we are dedicated to creating a culture of accessibility and inclusion with safe services, programs, events and facilities that welcome all people."

“It was decided to discontinue the program due to the increased costs of ice weather, as well as the availability of ice weather, which we felt made the program less accessible.”

The university says it is working into improving inclusivity and accessibility in the mean time, in the wake of Hockey Canada's sexual assault controversy.

“While there has been evidence that ice hockey creates a sense of belonging for some, there are critical areas that require improvement,” the notice said.
